Israeli Strike Kills Hamas Official in Lebanon, Escalating Conflict
Over the weekend, an Israeli strike in the Badawi refugee camp near Tripoli, North Lebanon killed Hamas official Said Atallah Ali, along with his wife and two children. This marked the first Israeli strike in Tripoli, as tensions escalate in the region.
Israel has been intensifying its strikes in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah and Hamas operatives. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the strike in Tripoli, a Sunni-majority port city.
Lebanon’s government has reported over 2,000 casualties in the past year, with a sharp increase in the past two weeks. The conflict has forced over 1.2 million Lebanese from their homes, overwhelming displacement shelters in the country.
International Response
The United Nations has condemned the toll on Lebanese civilians as “totally unacceptable,” with Iran reaffirming support for Hezbollah. The U.S. and Israeli governments are considering their responses amidst rising tensions in the region.
The conflict, stemming from a Palestinian attack in October 2023, has resulted in widespread devastation in Gaza and southern Lebanon. Ground operations in Lebanon continue as both sides prepare for further escalation.
