Poverty has become widespread in Hong Kong, extending beyond just older districts, according to a population health expert. Professor Paul Yip Siu-fai from the University of Hong Kong highlighted the urgent need for official poverty measurements and community support to address the escalating issue.
However, welfare chief Chris Sun Yuk-han defended the government’s targeted alleviation approach, emphasizing that income alone should not define poverty. Yip emphasized the increasing hardship faced by low-skilled workers post-pandemic due to economic restructuring.
Yip’s research revealed a significant rise in poverty levels across all districts in Hong Kong, challenging the misconception that poverty was confined to specific areas like Tuen Mun and Kwun Tong. The call to action is clear – collaborative efforts and policy revisions are essential to combat the pervasive effects of poverty on Hong Kong’s population.
