Horrific news emerged from central Haiti as a gang attack claimed the lives of scores of people, including three infants, the United Nations Human Rights Office reported. The Gran Grif gang mercilessly used automatic rifles to kill at least 70 individuals, including 10 women and three infants, in the town of Pont Sondé. The attack left 16 seriously injured, with 45 houses and 34 vehicles set ablaze, displacing over 6,000 people. As violence continues to ravage the region, the Haitian Ministry of Health faces challenges in responding due to the tense security situation.
The gang responsible, led by Luckson Elan, known for heinous crimes including kidnapping, murder, and rape, has been a symbol of terror in Artibonite. With the escalating gang violence in Haiti, the UN has emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, reparations for victims, and increased support for security forces. Despite the tragedy, Prime Minister Garry Conille reassured the nation’s resilience in the face of terror.
