The recent mass shooting in Haiti has left at least 70 people dead, prompting the government to deploy anti-gang police teams to the area near the capital Port-au-Prince. The gunmen, believed to be members of the Gran Grif gang, opened fire in the town of Pont Sonde, killing men, women, and children indiscriminately.
Prime Minister Garry Conille condemned the attack, emphasizing the need for a strong response to such violence. UN Human Rights Office spokesman Thameen Al-Kheetan stated that the gang members also set fire to homes and vehicles, resulting in many residents fleeing the area.
The attack, which met little resistance from authorities, highlights the escalating conflict in Haiti. With over 3,500 lives lost to gang violence since January, the government is under pressure to take swift action to protect its citizens.
Haiti’s PM Urges Coordinated Response
Prime Minister Conille called for urgent and coordinated efforts to address the violence, with the deployment of additional police units to combat gang activity. The attack serves as a stark reminder of the security challenges facing Haiti and the need for a comprehensive response to ensure the safety of its people.
