Delhi Air Quality Deteriorates as 2024 Sees More Poor Air Days
As winter approaches, Delhi’s air quality once again takes a hit, with a thick smog enveloping the region. Data from this year shows 184 good to moderate air days and 86 poor to severe air days until September 26. Compared to last year, there are more poor to severe air days and fewer good to moderate air days.
The Central Pollution Control Board’s data indicates that 2024 had more days with ‘satisfactory’ air quality but fewer ‘moderate’ air days compared to 2023. The city saw an increase in ‘very poor’ air days, with similar numbers in the ‘severe’ category. However, the ‘poor’ category fared better this year.
Despite 2023 having better air quality, except during the nationwide lockdown in 2020, this year’s numbers show a decline. Various factors contribute to Delhi’s air pollution, including rapid urbanization, industrial activities, increased vehicles, and crop residue burning in neighboring states.
As Diwali approaches, the use of firecrackers worsens the situation. Efforts are needed to address these environmental challenges and improve air quality in the national capital for a healthier future.
