4 migrants, including child, die attempting to cross English Channel on small boats

Four migrants, including a 2-year-old child, tragically lost their lives while attempting to cross the English Channel to Britain, according to French authorities. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau called the incidents a “terrible tragedy” and emphasized the role of smugglers in these deadly crossings. The deaths are part of a disturbing trend, with 2024 becoming one of the deadliest years for migration in the English Channel.

In one incident, rescuers found the lifeless body of a 2-year-old child on a migrant boat, while in another, three migrants perished as they fell from an overloaded boat. The survivors, hailing from various countries, were brought back to France for questioning and medical treatment. Despite the risks and tragedies, some migrants continued their journey towards Britain.

The incidents highlight the dangerous and inhumane practices of human smugglers, leading to increased scrutiny and efforts to combat these criminal networks. The strict asylum rules and hostile treatment faced by migrants in Europe contribute to their desperate attempts to reach safer shores. Before these tragic events, at least 46 migrants had already lost their lives this year while attempting to cross to the UK.
