US calls for Lebanese elections following Nasrallah’s death

The White House is seizing the opportunity presented by Israel’s recent strikes on Hezbollah to push for the election of a new Lebanese president, after almost two years of political instability in the country. Hezbollah’s leadership has been significantly weakened by Israeli attacks, paving the way for a new leader in Lebanon.

The US and France support Gen. Joseph Aoun, commander of the Lebanese armed forces, as a potential candidate for the presidency. With Hezbollah’s influence waning, there is a chance to elect a president who is not aligned with the Shia militia.

Lebanon’s political system, based on religious sect power-sharing, has been disrupted by Hezbollah’s veto over the presidency. The US sees this moment as an opportunity to break the deadlock and prioritize the election of a new president.

Acting Prime Minister Najib Mikati and US officials are working towards a diplomatic solution in Lebanon, starting with the election of a president who represents the majority of the Lebanese people. This step could pave the way for a ceasefire and a new prime minister in Lebanon.
