UI don criticizes police over Rivers LG poll handling

A security scholar at the University of Ibadan (UI), Prof. Oyesoji Aremu, criticized the Nigeria Police Force’s decision not to provide security for the local government election in Rivers State. The police cited a Federal High Court ruling for their non-involvement in the election.

Prof. Aremu argued that the police were neglecting their primary responsibility of providing internal security by not participating in the election. He emphasized the importance of security in a democratic society and the role of the police in upholding law and order.

Quoting Robert Peel, the founder of modern policing, Aremu highlighted the principles of policing that include seeking public favor through impartial service and independence of policy. He expressed concern that the police’s withdrawal could set a dangerous precedent and urged other security agencies to step in if needed.
