Two men were shot by police in Sydney’s west after allegedly driving a stolen car, taken from State Labor MP Karen McKeown’s home, at officers in an underground car park. Police responded to reports of a stolen car at 12.10pm on Lane Street in Wentworthville, locating the stolen Mercedes-Benz SUV through a GPS tracker.
The officers, including a sergeant and probationary officer, opened fire when the car was driven at them. The injured men were taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment, with one sustaining serious neck injuries and the other serious thigh injuries.
McKeown’s husband’s car was stolen from their home in Leonay, near Penrith, before the shooting. McKeown thanked the police for their prompt response and bravery, postponing a scheduled event. A critical incident has been declared, with an independent review to follow the investigation.
Neighbours reported hearing screams and gunshots before emergency services arrived. Police are set to address the media later today for further updates on the situation.
