Senate Amends Northwest and Southeast Commissions Laws, Reads South-South Commission Bill
In a significant move, President Bola Tinubu submitted four executive bills to the National Assembly, focusing on comprehensive tax reforms. One of the proposals includes renaming the Federal Inland Revenue Service to Nigeria Revenue Service. The Senate also initiated the process to amend the North West Development Commission and South East Development Commission acts to resolve issues surrounding managing director and chairman positions.
Furthermore, a coalition of concerned northerners expressed dissatisfaction over the exclusion of women from the governing board of the North West Development Commission. The reforms aim to improve taxpayer compliance, strengthen fiscal institutions, and promote economic growth. The amendments to the commission acts seek fair representation and prevent appointing both chairman and MD from the same state within the zone.
Additionally, the South-South Development Commission bill passed its second reading in the Senate, signaling progress towards its establishment. The coalition urged for female representation on the board, emphasizing the importance of harnessing their expertise and insights for effective governance and peace-building in the region.
