Tanzania has suspended the online publications of Mwananchi Communications Limited due to the publication of “prohibited content.” The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) issued a 30-day suspension for the provision of online media services by MCL, affecting products like The Citizen, Mwananchi Digital, and Mwanaspoti.
TCRA’s Director-General cited the publication of content that threatens national unity and social peace as the reason for the suspension. MCL promptly complied with the order and expressed its commitment to resolving the issue with regulators while continuing to provide news through print editions.
The controversial content, an animation posted on The Citizen’s social media accounts, led to the shutdown of all MCL’s digital platforms. The regulator referenced regulations prohibiting content against public order and reputation in justifying the suspension.
While the criteria for violations are not explicitly defined, the incident underscores the regulatory challenges faced by media organizations in Tanzania.
