Sky News cancels Boris Johnson interview due to recording ban

Sky News has withdrawn from an interview with Boris Johnson after restrictions were placed on recording the conversation. This move comes after the BBC dropped their interview with Johnson due to an error made by presenter Laura Kuenssberg. Johnson’s interview with Sky News political editor Beth Rigby was supposed to shed light on his time as mayor, foreign secretary, and prime minister, in line with promoting his memoir “Unleashed.”

In a statement, Rigby expressed disappointment over not being able to record or transcribe the interview, ultimately leading to her decision to pull out of the event. Johnson, in a separate interview with ITV News, expressed regret over apologizing for his government’s involvement in lockdown parties at Downing Street during 2020. He criticized the apologies as being unnecessary and causing unwarranted backlash towards his officials.

Moreover, Johnson’s memoir revealed that a £400m deal to secure the release of British-Iranian prisoner Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was blocked by former education secretary Gavin Williamson, citing concerns over the money being used by Hezbollah. Despite approval from the Treasury and Foreign Office, the decision needed all relevant departments to sign off, including Williamson’s Ministry of Defence.
