The official circles in Poland are urging the Ukrainian authorities to take further steps in addressing historical issues, particularly regarding the exhumation of Polish victims of the Volyn tragedy. Polish Foreign Ministry head Radoslaw Sikorski and Marshal of the Senate Malgorzata Kidawa-Blonska responded to the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance’s plan to search for victims’ bodies in 2025 following appeals from Polish citizens.
Sikorski emphasized the national consensus in Poland on the exhumation issue, urging for reconciliation and unity with Ukraine. He mentioned discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a recent visit to Kyiv and stressed the importance of resolving the issue for Polish-Ukrainian relations.
Kidawa-Blonska welcomed the Ukrainian Institute of National Rememberance’s initiative but stated that further proposals are awaited. The Volyn tragedy remains a sensitive topic in Ukrainian-Polish relations, with differing opinions on responsibility and the need for mutual apologies.
The issue is exploited by Russian propaganda to sow discord between the two nations. Both Poland and Ukraine are seeking reconciliation and friendship through addressing historical grievances.
