Tragedy Strikes: Ill-fated Boat Capsizes with 300 Passengers on Board

More bodies are being recovered from the Gbajibo River, Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, after a wooden boat carrying 300 passengers capsized on Tuesday night. The National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, along with NEMA and local divers, have recovered 70 bodies and rescued 150 individuals, with the search ongoing for the remaining missing passengers.

President Tinubu sends condolences, while Governor Bago vows to enforce water transportation laws to prevent such tragedies. The Lagos Area Manager of NIWA blames the boat operators for illegal night sailing, overloading, and lack of safety measures.

NIWA plans 24-hour surveillance to prevent future accidents. President Tinubu directs NIWA to investigate and enhance safety measures, while Governor Bago promises stricter enforcement of regulations to curb mishaps.

Let us mourn the victims, pray for their families, and work towards a safer water transport system to avoid such heartbreaking incidents in the future.
