Namadi provides 75% subsidy for Jigawa’s wheat farmers

Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has announced a significant subsidy program benefiting local wheat farmers. The state government covers 75% of costs for agricultural inputs, aiming to enhance wheat production and support food self-sufficiency in Nigeria. Namadi expressed commitment to expanding wheat cultivation, highlighting the allocation of 40,000 hectares to the state through collaboration with the African Development Bank and Federal Ministry of Agriculture.

Through partnerships with the Flour Milling Association of Nigeria, an additional 5,000 hectares have been cultivated, totaling 55,000 hectares dedicated to wheat farming. The subsidy reduces financial burdens on farmers, increasing participation and improving outcomes. Namadi aims to scale up production to 100,000 hectares and double engagement with the Flour Milling Association to further boost wheat cultivation.

Efforts to improve seed availability, including importing seeds from Mexico and promoting local seed production, demonstrate the state’s commitment to a prosperous agricultural sector. By engaging local youth in seed production, Jigawa State aims to become a leader in wheat production, ensuring food self-sufficiency and fostering economic growth.
