The conflict in Ukraine has resulted in the deaths of at least 177 Ukrainian prisoners in Russian captivity, with the actual number potentially being higher due to lack of international oversight. Many of these prisoners never received visits from the Red Cross while in captivity. Russia has refused to confirm the captivity or whereabouts of thousands of Ukrainian POWs.
Reports have surfaced of Ukrainian POWs being tortured or killed in Russian captivity, with criminal investigations ongoing for the execution of 84 prisoners. Sixteen POWs were reportedly shot by Russian forces after surrendering, marking the largest case of mass execution on the battlefield.
Despite the grim situation, Ukraine and Russia have conducted 57 prisoner exchanges since the war began, with 3,672 Ukrainians brought back from Russian captivity. Efforts are being made to facilitate an all-for-all exchange, discussed during peace talks in Switzerland.
