In Zhongwei, a city in northwest China’s Ningxia Hui autonomous region, the battle against poverty is ongoing. Despite overall improvements in living standards across the country, Shapotou district recently added 28 individuals to its poverty relapse watch list.
Officials in charge of the list keep track of families facing financial difficulties to prevent them from falling below the poverty line or becoming overly dependent on government support. This proactive approach aims to prevent a resurgence of widespread poverty amid economic challenges.
China has invested nearly 1.6 trillion yuan (US$306 billion) in poverty alleviation efforts since President Xi Jinping took office in 2012. While absolute poverty has been eliminated in 2021, the government’s focus now is on achieving common prosperity and ensuring a decent standard of living for all citizens by 2050.
