Houthis’ 188 Ship Attacks in Yemen Since Nov ’23

In a series of attacks since November 2023, the Houthi rebels have targeted 188 ships in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and Indian Ocean, claiming they are linked to Israel. The leader, Abdul Malik al Houthis, emphasized their resistance against the US and Israel in a recent speech. These attacks are in solidarity with Gaza, with the goal of ending Israeli military operations in the area.

To protect shipping in the region, the US launched Operation “Prosperity Guardian” in December 2023. US and British forces have also conducted strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen. The group draws inspiration from the “Axis of Islamic Resistance” and is said to receive military support from Lebanese Hezbollah.

The conflict has major implications on global shipping, with many companies avoiding the Red Sea route and opting for the Cape of Good Hope instead. The situation has caused disruptions and increased costs in maritime transport.
