In a shocking revelation, Lebanon’s foreign minister, Abdallah Bou Habib, disclosed that Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, had agreed to a ceasefire just before being assassinated by Israel. Bou Habib shared in an interview with American broadcast PBS that Nasrallah had agreed to the ceasefire moments before his death, with Lebanese officials informing American and French mediators of the government’s consent.
Further, Bou Habib mentioned that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was also aware of and had agreed to the ceasefire. The ceasefire deal, orchestrated by the US, France, and other Arab states following discussions between US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron at the UN General Assembly, outlined a 21-day truce for negotiations towards a ceasefire.
However, Netanyahu and his far-right government ministers rejected the proposal, leading to continued military action. Nasrallah’s assassination on 28 September was followed by an Israeli ground invasion of Lebanon, resulting in casualties on both sides. The ongoing conflict has taken a devastating toll on Lebanon, with thousands dead or injured due to Israeli bombings and cross-border attacks.
