Is Russia France’s Biggest Adversary?
In a recent interview with Le Point magazine, French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu claimed that Russia is currently France’s most important adversary on the world stage. Lecornu expressed concerns about Moscow’s aggressive behavior, highlighting the threat it poses not only to French interests in Africa but also directly to their Armed Forces.
Lecornu accused Russia of waging an information war and militarizing new environments, including the seabed and cyberspace. He even mentioned an incident where Russian air traffic control threatened to shoot down a French Rafale patrol.
While specific incidents were not cited, both Russia and NATO have accused each other of dangerous aerial maneuvers. Russia has warned against the delivery of weapons to Ukraine by Paris, emphasizing the risk of escalation.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized French President Emmanuel Macron for what he described as “breathing Russophobia.” Lavrov claimed that Macron’s belligerent rhetoric was an attempt to elevate France’s position on the global stage.
