The fight against domestic violence in Ukraine has seen a significant increase in criminal proceedings initiated this year. With 8,185 cases recorded since the beginning of the year, a staggering 80% rise compared to last year, the issue is more prevalent than ever. Mostly affecting women and children, these criminal offenses highlight the urgent need for action.
Iryna Shurkhno, head of the domestic violence countering department at the Prosecutor General’s Office, emphasized the potential exacerbation of the problem amid wartime conditions. However, she also noted a positive trend with more people seeking help and trust in law enforcement increasing.
Prosecutors are working closely with support services and organizations to provide holistic assistance to victims, including medical, psychological, legal, and shelter support. It is crucial for victims to understand the severity of their situation and seek help to prevent further harm.
The Prosecutor General has made combating domestic violence a top priority, focusing on victim protection, offender accountability, and reducing stress during legal proceedings. Victims are encouraged to utilize hotlines for support.
With a concerning rise in domestic violence rates, especially linked to PTSD cases among war veterans, it is imperative for authorities and the community to come together to address and prevent such incidents effectively.
