Defense Minister Nikos Dendias has announced significant changes to Greece’s mandatory military service, to be implemented in the next two years as part of the 2030 Agenda.

The reforms aim to transform military service into a comprehensive process that provides soldiers with military and business skills. Dendias made this announcement at the Thebes Artillery Training School inauguration.

Soldiers will now have the option to voluntarily re-enlist periodically, acquiring skills useful for both military and civilian jobs. The minister emphasized the importance of aligning these skills with the demands of the job market.

In addition, Dendias introduced a voluntary temporary enlistment program for women, estimating a three-year adjustment period for the reserve system. Currently, women can only join the military as professionals, not as reserve members.

The minister also mentioned upgrades to military uniforms and equipment, including new helmets, protective goggles, and kneepads.

Military service in Greece is compulsory for men aged 19 to 45, with service durations varying from six to twelve months based on circumstances.
