Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari Urges Passage of Constitutional Amendment by Oct 25
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has emphasized the urgency of passing the 26th constitutional amendment before Oct 25 to avoid a potential clash between institutions, with parliament being the ultimate loser. The proposed amendment aims to establish a Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) as part of PPP’s manifesto and Charter of Democracy agenda.
Bhutto-Zardari highlighted the need for judicial reforms and the establishment of the FCC to prevent interference in parliamentary affairs, citing previous hurdles faced during the passing of the 18th and 19th Amendments. Failure to establish the FCC could escalate tensions between the judiciary and establishment, jeopardizing the parliamentary system’s integrity.
Amidst growing polarization in society, Bhutto-Zardari reiterated his opposition to military courts and stressed the importance of consensus-building among political parties. He expressed concerns over the judiciary’s extensive powers and the need to balance them through the FCC.
With the Oct 25 deadline fast approaching, the passage of the constitutional package is crucial to safeguard parliamentary supremacy and prevent institutional conflicts. Bhutto-Zardari’s advocacy for timely constitutional reform underscores the PPP’s commitment to upholding democratic principles in Pakistan.
