Australia enhances security for Oct 6-7 pro-Palestine protests

Australian authorities are ramping up security measures ahead of pro-Palestine rallies in Sydney and Melbourne on Oct 6, vowing zero tolerance for violence amidst the Israel-Hamas conflict that is sparking protests worldwide.

The Palestine Action Group in Sydney has adjusted their plans to comply with police agreements, avoiding a rally on Oct 7 and instead scheduling for Sunday with a vigil on Monday. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese urged protesters to consider the impact of their actions on community harmony.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns warned against insensitivity in holding a vigil in Sydney, promising a strong police response if needed. Rising antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents since the Israel-Gaza conflict have prompted tighter security laws against terror group symbols in Australia.

Melbourne protests last weekend are under investigation for displaying Hezbollah symbols, a designated terrorist organization in Australia. Victoria state police will increase patrols near synagogues in Melbourne and monitor community events for safety.
