Argentina is determined to gain “full sovereignty” over the Falkland Islands following the UK’s decision to relinquish control of a remote archipelago in exchange for securing a crucial military base’s future.
The country’s foreign minister, Diana Mondino, applauded British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government for taking steps to end “outdated practices” by returning the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, promising concrete action to reclaim the Falklands, known as the Malvinas to Argentina.
While Falklands Governor Alison Blake reassured residents of Britain’s unwavering commitment, the UK government finalized a political agreement with Mauritius over the Chagos Islands, ensuring sovereignty for Mauritius while maintaining the US-UK military base on Diego Garcia.
US President Joe Biden hailed the agreement as historic, securing the joint facility’s effective operation into the next century. However, reactions were mixed, with some concerned about potential security risks.
The agreement aims to address past wrongs and support the welfare of Chagossians forcibly displaced for the military base. As the UK and Argentina navigate their historical conflict over the Falklands, diplomatic initiatives seek to resolve longstanding disputes and secure territorial integrity.
