Protesters Arrested as PTI Rally Ensues in Islamabad
As tensions rise in Islamabad and Rawalpindi with mobile networks and internet services suspended, at least 30 protesters have been arrested amid a planned PTI rally at the capital’s D-Chowk. Despite a ban on gatherings, PTI founder Imran Khan has urged supporters to join a “peaceful protest” against his imprisonment and the Election Commission of Pakistan’s delays.
The PTI has been carrying out rallies across the country, demanding the release of their leader and implementation of reserved seats verdict. The government’s strict guidelines led to clashes between PTI workers and authorities in previous rallies.
JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman has requested the PTI to delay gatherings until after foreign dignitaries’ visits. However, the police have already blocked entry points to the cities and begun tear gas shelling to disperse protesters.
Amidst the chaos, Imran Khan’s sister and other PTI members have reportedly been arrested, while roads leading to key areas in Islamabad have been sealed off. Despite the crackdown, the PTI continues to mobilize caravans from various cities.
Amnesty International has condemned the government’s actions, citing violations of people’s rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. The situation remains tense as PTI supporters defy the ban and push forward with their protests.
