Flash floods and landslides in central Bosnia-Herzegovina have resulted in at least 18 fatalities, with entire towns and villages cut off and reports of homes nearly submerged. The most severe damage was seen around Jablanica, a town situated between Mostar and Sarajevo. A state of emergency has been declared, and numerous individuals have been reported missing.
Images of flooded residential areas and mosques highlight the devastating aftermath of the natural disaster. Roadways, bridges, and railway tracks have been washed away, with houses buried under rocks and earth up to their upper levels. A 200m stretch of railway was left suspended due to a landslide near Jablanica.
The flooding extended beyond Bosnia, affecting Montenegro and Croatia. Experts attribute the severity of the floods to climate change, citing a four-day period of record-breaking rainfall. This recent calamity underscores the urgent need for climate action amid rising global temperatures.
