Western region still falls behind other regions

A recent report commissioned by the Western Development Commission (WDC) has shed light on the challenges faced by the western and north western region of Ireland. The report highlighted issues such as low average disposable income, a decline in new house completions, and underinvestment in infrastructure.

Titled ‘Bridging the Divide, 25 Years of Transformation in the Western region,’ the report also celebrated the successes achieved over the past 25 years, including job creation and economic growth in the region. The WDC has played a crucial role in supporting companies and creating thousands of jobs in the area.

However, despite these achievements, the CEO of WDC, Allan Mulrooney, emphasized that the region is at a critical juncture and in need of targeted investments in areas like infrastructure and renewable energy to ensure long-term prosperity.

The report also highlighted the need for collaborative efforts to address the challenges faced by the region, particularly in rural areas. The WDC is actively working with the government to advocate for necessary investments that will lead to tangible improvements in the region.

Further discussions on the future of regional development will take place at the upcoming Regional Development Summit, where stakeholders will address key issues affecting the region’s growth.
