US sanctions four Ugandan police chiefs over rights abuses

By Julius Barigaba

The US Department of State has imposed travel sanctions on four officers of the Uganda Police Force for alleged gross violations of human rights, including torture and degrading treatment. The designated individuals include former police commanders and senior officials. These sanctions make them and their families ineligible for entry into the United States.

The sanctioned officers have been accused of serious human rights violations as documented by various sources. This latest action adds to the increasing list of Uganda government officials facing visa bans and financial sanctions for similar offenses. The US remains committed to promoting human rights in Uganda through these targeted measures.

These sanctions are enforced under Section 7031(c) of the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2024.
