US Announces $32 Million in Humanitarian Aid for South Sudanese Refugees
The US has pledged $32 million in new humanitarian assistance funding for the Sudan crisis, specifically aimed at supporting refugee response in South Sudan. This announcement was made by the US Representative to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, on October 3.
This brings the total US relief aid for South Sudan to over $105 million in fiscal year 2024, with total humanitarian assistance in South Sudan, including aid for South Sudanese people in need, reaching over $640 million during the same period.
Thomas-Greenfield emphasized the urgent need for South Sudan’s Transitional Government to increase its contribution to humanitarian response and essential public services. The country is facing multiple humanitarian crises, exacerbated by influxes of returnees and refugees from the conflict in Sudan.
The situation is further complicated by conflict, insecurity, epidemic outbreaks, and environmental challenges like flooding and heatwaves, which are impacting vulnerable populations, particularly children. Efforts to support the South Sudanese people must be intensified to address these pressing challenges.
