Haiti, one of the world’s poorest countries, is facing a dire situation with gangs controlling the capital, Port-au-Prince, and the collapse of security and healthcare systems. The International Organization for Migration reported that over 700,000 people have been displaced in Haiti, a 22% increase since June, calling for urgent international attention to the crisis.
The majority of the displaced are now sheltering in the country’s provinces, facing overcrowded conditions and limited access to basic services. The strain on host families is immense, with food shortages, overwhelmed healthcare facilities, and lack of essential supplies.
The situation in Port-au-Prince remains precarious, with people living in overcrowded sites. The UN has reported over 3,600 deaths this year due to gang violence in Haiti. In response, a multinational stabilization force led by Kenya has been deployed to assist the Haitian police, with the Security Council extending its authorization of the mission.
Efforts to restore stability and security in Haiti must continue, along with humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the crisis.
