The Lagos State Government has announced that the ban on Single-Use Plastics, such as pet bottles and sachet water, will be effective from January 2025 across the state. This decision comes in response to the increasing prevalence of plastic waste and its negative impact on the environment.

During a stakeholders’ workshop at the Manufacturer Association of Nigeria, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the need for a phased implementation of the ban with the backing of an appropriate legal framework.

While the ban on Styrofoam has already begun, the ban on Single-Use Plastics will be enforced starting in January 2025. The goal is to reduce plastic pollution in the marine environment and improve the state’s drainage channels.

Stakeholders like the Association for Table Water Producers of Nigeria have expressed their willingness to work with the government but have requested a phased approach to compliance to allow for necessary adjustments.

By taking this proactive step, Lagos State aims to create a cleaner and more sustainable environment for its residents while mitigating the harmful effects of plastic pollution.
