Student protests erupt in Argentina over budget cuts

Argentina’s FUA university federation leader, Piera Fernandez, emphasized the importance of public university education, stating that it is crucial for the country’s future. She highlighted that investing in education and science is an investment in the nation’s growth, not an expense.

In response to proposed cuts in the higher education budget, a massive protest by students and teachers compelled the government to reconsider. Despite reassurances from the ministry of human capital that public universities will not be defunded, concerns remain about the financial challenges faced by educators and staff.

The University of Buenos Aires reported a significant decline in purchasing power for university personnel, raising fears about the impact on wages and research activities. UBA graduate and teacher Florencia Rivero warned of serious consequences if the proposed legislation is vetoed, urging stakeholders to unite in support of higher education.
