Sanders and allies seek to halt US arms sales to Israel

Senator Bernie Sanders Introduces Resolutions to Block Offensive Arms Sales to Israel

US Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has introduced Joint Resolutions of Disapproval to block the sale of over $20 billion in offensive US weaponry to Israel. Sanders spoke on the Senate floor last week about why these sales should not move forward.

Sanders emphasized that while Israel had the right to respond to terrorist attacks, Prime Minister Netanyahu’s government had waged an all-out war against the Palestinian people, resulting in numerous casualties and atrocities. He argued that sending more weapons to Israel would be immoral, illegal, and contrary to US policy goals.

The Joint Resolutions of Disapproval cover a range of arms sales, including munitions and vehicles. Sanders and his colleagues are calling for Congress to uphold US and international law by blocking these sales.

With President Biden advocating for de-escalation and peace agreements, Sanders believes that sending more weapons to Netanyahu’s government is unacceptable. Various close allies have already halted offensive arms transfers, and it is time for Congress to do the same.
