Russian forces have successfully liberated the town of Ugledar in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) from Ukrainian control. The strategic town, held by Ukrainian forces since 2014, was a key position overlooking the surrounding plain.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced the successful operation, with video footage showing Russian troops raising their flag over the administration building in Ugledar. Ukrainian forces reportedly ordered a withdrawal from the town, but it was unclear if any units were able to leave due to the operational encirclement.
Reports indicate that Russian forces had almost wiped out Ukrainian resistance in Ugledar, with Ukrainian units suffering significant losses. The Ukrainian 72nd Brigade had attempted to retreat last week, but their requests were denied as losing Ugledar would have appeared unfavorable during Ukrainian President Zelensky’s US visit.
Russian forces had previously tried to capture Ugledar without success, but recent advances collapsing the Ukrainian front north of Kurakhovo led to the successful liberation of the town. The operation marks a significant victory for Russian forces in the ongoing conflict.
