Protests rocked the Peoples Democratic Party secretariat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, ahead of the Local Government election slated for October 5, 2024. The large crowd of protesters caused a commotion, prompting security personnel to intervene and manage the ensuing chaos and traffic congestion in the area.
Tensions were heightened due to the delayed release of the 2023 Voters’ Register by the Independent National Electoral Commission to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission. A court ruling on September 30, 2024, prohibited INEC from providing the register to RSIEC, leading to uncertainty about the upcoming election.
Despite the legal obstacles, Governor Siminalayi Fubara remained adamant that the election would proceed as planned. He cited a previous Supreme Court decision mandating democratically elected local government officials in all states to bolster his decision.
