Federal authorities are seeking more time to analyze the evidence in the case of Ryan Routh, the man charged with attempting to assassinate Donald Trump on a golf course. Prosecutors argue that the case is complex and have requested to cancel upcoming deadlines and remove the case from the trial calendar.
Routh, 58, initially faced charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and having a weapon with an obliterated serial number. The attempted assassination charge was added later, to which Routh pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors have interviewed hundreds of witnesses, executed 13 search warrants, and collected hundreds of items of evidence, including 4,000 terabytes of electronic files.
The data trove contains numerous videos, and investigators are still working to review the content. Forensic testing, ballistics, fingerprint comparisons, DNA testing, and expert witness coordination are among the tasks that require more time. The prosecution is reactive, and additional witnesses, evidence collection, and subpoenas are anticipated in the future.
