In a move that could potentially mend ties between Ukraine and Poland, Ukrainian authorities have announced their approval for the exhumation of some World War II-era victims of massacres by Ukrainian nationalists. This decision comes after years of diplomatic tensions between the two nations due to the Volyn massacres that occurred between 1943 and 1945.
The announcement was made during Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga’s visit to Poland, where the Polish government has long campaigned for actions to be taken regarding the historical dispute. The exhumation is set to take place in the western region of Rivne, where an estimated 100,000 Poles and 5,000 Ukrainians lost their lives.
