Peru is set to revolutionize its air defense with the purchase of 24 advanced fighter jets worth $3.5 billion. This significant investment, the country’s first major combat aircraft fleet renewal in nearly 30 years, was announced by Defense Minister Walter Astudillo. The deal includes 20 single-seat fighters and 4 two-seat variants, aiming to upgrade Peru’s aging air force fleet currently operating Mirage 2000P/DP and second-hand MiG-29 Fulcrum jets.
The contenders for the contract are the United States with the Lockheed Martin F-16V Block 70, Sweden offering the Saab JAS 39 Gripen, and France proposing the Dassault Rafale F4. The strategic investment includes an initial payment of $2 billion in 2025, followed by $1.5 billion in 2026, to enhance Peru’s air superiority and deterrence capabilities.
While some question the project’s high cost, military officials emphasize the crucial need for this upgrade in national defense. Additionally, the acquisition is expected to boost Peru’s aerospace sector through industrial cooperation and technology transfers, marking a significant step in the country’s military modernization efforts.
