NLC warns of challenges in new minimum wage rollout

NLC Alerts State Councils to Prepare for Battle for Full Implementation of N70,000 New Minimum Wage

President of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG and National Trustee of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Prince Williams Akporeha, along with President of NLC, Joe Ajaero, and General Secretary of NLC, Emma Ugboaja, gathered in Lagos for a workshop for NLC state councils from the South.

Amidst the anticipation for the implementation of the N70,000 new national minimum wage by the federal government, NLC urged its state councils to be ready for a tough battle to ensure complete execution of the new wage. President Joe Ajaero emphasized that the fight for the wage is not over until it benefits all workers.

The workshop’s theme, “Strategies for Effective Implementation of the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act,” focused on empowering state councils to advocate for workers’ rights. Ajaero commended the support of Fredrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in championing the cause.

As Ajaero reiterated the importance of unity and determination in the face of opposition, he reminded attendees of their duty to secure the dignity of work and deliver the benefits of the new wage to every worker in Nigeria.
