Gen. Akec Tong Aleu Sworn in to Head Internal Security Bureau Amid Criticism
Gen. Akec Tong Aleu was officially sworn in to lead the Internal Security Bureau of the National Security Service (NSS) in a ceremony that took place recently. The NSS has been under intense scrutiny for alleged abusive practices.
Previously serving as the Undersecretary for Veteran Affairs in the Ministry of Defense, Gen. Akec brings a wealth of experience to his new role. President Salva Kiir appointed him to replace the long-serving Director General, Gen Akol Koor Kuc, who has now transitioned to the role of Governor of Warrap State.
Gen. Akec, a military officer from the Tonj area of Warrap State, is now tasked with leading a security agency that has been criticized for cracking down on opposition voices. Despite the challenges ahead, President Kiir expressed his full support for the new appointment.
The shake-up at the NSS comes amid the postponement of general elections and ongoing concerns about human rights abuses. Gen. Akec’s appointment marks a significant moment in the agency’s history, as he takes on the responsibility of ensuring security while upholding respect for human rights.
