National ministers assist in resolving Emfuleni’s Eskom payment issue

Emfuleni municipality and Eskom reached a payment agreement where Emfuleni will pay R150m per month instead of the expected R250m. Sangweni, a representative of the municipality, thanked stakeholders, labor unions, and staff for their patience and collaboration during this time.

The municipality’s bank accounts were attached, leading to a campaign to disconnect electricity from non-paying residents and businesses. Sangweni urged consumers to pay for services and stop illegal connections to support the municipality.

This issue is not new for the municipality, as they faced a similar situation with Rand Water in the past. The cash-strapped municipality, serving areas like Evaton and Boipatong, was previously under administration due to maladministration and service delivery failures.

As operations are set to normalize, employees are expected to report for duty. Emfuleni municipality aims to provide essential services and remain a municipality of choice with residents and businesses’ support.
