Lebanon civilians displaced as Israel targets Hezbollah.

Civilians in Lebanon are facing a “truly catastrophic” situation due to the ongoing conflict with Israel and Hezbollah, according to a senior United Nations official. With over 1 million people impacted and a rapid pace of displacement, the damage to civilian infrastructure is overwhelming.

Imran Riza, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, described the situation as “truly catastrophic,” especially after Israel intensified airstrikes on Lebanon. The level of trauma and fear among the population is extreme, with many being displaced multiple times, only to face further attacks.

With 97 medical and emergency workers killed and significant damage to infrastructure, civilians are bearing the brunt of the conflict. Calls for respecting international humanitarian law and protecting civilians and infrastructure are being emphasized.

The conflict, which began nearly a year ago, has further exacerbated Lebanon’s existing crises. As the country struggles to cope, a $426 million appeal has been launched to support those affected by the conflict.

Despite facing a similar war in 2006, Lebanon is now in a weaker position to handle the current situation, with fewer resources and weaker institutions.
