The Decline of Democrat Support Among Muslim and Arab Voters
Support from Muslim and Arab voters for the Democratic party has taken a sharp decline amidst ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. A recent meeting between American Muslim and Arab leaders and Vice President Kamala Harris’ senior adviser, Phil Gordan, highlighted the anger towards US support for Israel’s actions in Gaza and Lebanon.
The Biden-Harris administration expressed support for a ceasefire in Gaza, diplomacy in Lebanon, and stability in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. However, many community leaders, such as Lebanese-American attorney Ali Dagher, feel the outreach is “too little, too late.”
With the upcoming presidential race pitting Harris against former President Donald Trump, the Muslim and Arab backing for Democrats has waned significantly due to perceived inaction on the Israeli military campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where over 41,000 Palestinians have been killed, and the casualties in Lebanon have only intensified the criticism. Despite endorsements from groups like Emgage, Harris may face challenges if voters opt to abstain or support third-party candidates. The issue of US support for Israel is igniting protests, particularly in swing states like Michigan.
As the election approaches, Harris will need to address these concerns to regain the trust of Muslim and Arab voters who feel left behind by current policies.
