The birth rate in Greece has dropped below 80,000 in 2022, marking a significant decline from 150,000 in 1980. With half of the population now over the age of 46, compared to a median age of 39 in 2000, the demographic landscape is rapidly changing in the country.
More than one in five Greeks are over 65, with the percentage of people over 80 doubling since 2000. The government has introduced a National Demographic Action Plan to address this aging population, focusing on strategies, policies, and measures with a 10-year horizon.
The plan consists of five pillars, 20 objectives, and over 200 actions with a budget of 20 billion euros. Despite these efforts, projections suggest that women born after 2010 may only have an average of 1.8 children each, leading to a potential 25% population decline by 2070 if current trends persist.
