The Unity Monument in Berlin, also known as the “Einheitswippe” or “unity seesaw,” was planned as a commemorative symbol of the peaceful protests that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification. However, 35 years later, construction remains unfinished due to disputes over funds and legal matters.
The monument’s walkable shell, designed by Milla & Partner and Sasha Waltz, is at the center of the latest dispute between federal ministries, a Stuttgart agency, and a metal construction company. The parties involved are at odds over money and responsibilities, causing delays and increasing costs.
The metal construction company responsible for building the shell is now bankrupt, adding another layer of complexity to the situation. Despite ongoing negotiations and efforts to find a solution, the completion of the monument hangs in the balance.
As the future of the Unity Monument remains uncertain, stakeholders are grappling with challenges that may result in the dismantling of the almost finished shell, a move that could send a powerful message about the current state of affairs in Germany.
