French jihadist Peter Cherif, linked to the Charlie Hebdo attackers, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of terrorist activities in Yemen.
Cherif, 42, was convicted of training Chérif Kouachi, one of the Charlie Hebdo attackers, during his time with Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Prosecutors described Cherif as a key figure in planning the terrorist attack.
Despite denying involvement in the Charlie Hebdo massacre, Cherif was sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum of 22 years to be served. He was also accused of being part of a group that held French hostages in Yemen.
Throughout the trial, Cherif remained silent but admitted to serving as an interpreter for the hostages. Prosecutors believe he was complicit in the attack and maintained contact with one of the assailants.
Despite the defense’s arguments, Cherif was convicted of terrorist association and sentenced to life behind bars.
