Singapore’s former transport minister S Iswaran was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment for accepting gifts and obstructing justice.
Despite being well-paid ministers, Singapore ranks high in global anti-corruption indices, making this case significant in the city-state.
Iswaran, who initially pleaded innocent, changed his plea in September, admitting to receiving gifts as a public servant without consideration.
First person in Singapore prosecuted for this offense since independence, Iswaran accepted gifts from Ong Beng Seng and Lum Kok Seng.
