The Federal Government has expressed concerns about the slow implementation of the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (SURWASH) programme by state governments. A recent High-Level Advocacy meeting with seven state governors highlighted the need for improved progress in Delta, Ekiti, Gombe, Imo, Kaduna, Katsina, and Plateau states.
Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, emphasized the importance of the governors’ understanding and commitment to the SURWASH programme. He noted that the program, now in its third year, had not fully met expectations due to lack of awareness among state leaders.
World Bank Country Director, Mr Ndiame Diop, also underscored the urgency of addressing Nigeria’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene crisis. With only 0.32% of GDP allocated to WASH services, Nigeria is falling behind in achieving SDGs.
Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, outlined the challenges faced in completing water and hygiene projects, emphasizing the need for clearer roles and collaboration between stakeholders.
The meeting concluded on the necessity of increased investment and collaboration to improve water supply and public health in Nigeria. With proper support and guidance, the SURWASH programme aims to enhance its impact and address critical WASH issues.
