Morales landed in Argentina once Alberto Fernández was sworn in

The Argentine Government of Javier Milei announced Wednesday that it was revoking former Bolivian President Evo Morales’ refugee status. Morales had stayed in Argentina as a refugee between December 2019 and November 2020, during the interim Government of Jeanine Áñez. The decision to revoke his status was made by Presidential Spokesman Manuel Adorni.

Morales, who sought asylum in Argentina under former President Alberto Fernández, faced accusations of corruption, electoral fraud, and political persecution. The Justice Ministry of Argentina emphasized that the government would not protect criminals or authoritarians like Morales, labeling him an “attempted dictator.”

Currently in Bolivia, Morales is engaged in a contentious campaign against his former Economy Minister Arce. The decision to revoke his refugee status demonstrates Argentina’s stance against harboring individuals accused of serious crimes.
